Education:

• 1999 – Enrolled in Winners Dance School, a famous dance school in South Korea specializing in popping, locking, animation and various other hip-hop styles. (This is also where she met and befriended Miss A’s Min, forming the dance group Little Winners.)
• 2004.3~8 –  Studied Mandarin Chinese in Beijing, China with Super Junior’s Siwon.

• Best SM Town dance trainee – Instead of training with the female trainees, Hyoyeon’s skill was such that she was the only girl to train alongside the male trainees.

FUN FACTS

Nicknames:

• Dancing Queen – Self-explanatory.
• 피오나 공주 (Fiona Gongju) – Princess Fiona – Sooyoung teasingly gave Hyoyeon this nickname after she had gained ~10kg during her time spent in China learning Mandarin. Unaware as to the true intention of the moniker, Hyoyeon happily accepted it because the title contained the word “princess”.
• 효랭이 (Hyoraengi) – Tiger Hyo – Tiffany’s mispronunciation of 호랑이 (horangi), Korean for “tiger”.
• 효땡(이) (Hyoddaeng(i)) – aegyo-ified version of “Hyoraengi” (most often used by Sunny)
• 김열살 (Kim Yeolsal) – ten-year-old,
• 김초딩(Kim Choding) – “elementary schooler”, and
• 효 어린이 (Hyo Eolini) – “Childish Hyo” are all nicknames for Hyoyeon’s childish mannerisms.
• 효바람 (Hyobaram) – “Casanova Hyo” (바람 baram means “wind” in Korean, (jokingly) implying Hyoyeon flits from man to man) – Sooyoung’s nickname for Hyoyeon when she was a fellow trainee in SM. As a young female trainee, she was admired and looked after by most if not all of the male trainees.
• 효숙이 (Hyosooki) – A pet name given to Hyoyeon by the male trainees at SM. Sooyoung said she actually thought it was Hyoyeon’s actual name when she first joined SM. (Sooyoung also has Hyoyeon’s cellphone number saved under this nickname.)
• 효레나룻 (Hyoretnarut) – “sideburns Hyo” (구레나룻 = sideburns) – Nickname given by fans for when Hyoyeon had cut her sideburns because they were too long. (See video)
• 요년(아) (Yonyeon(ah)) – A slightly distasteful way to call a girl; technically the equivalent to calling someone a “bitch” in English–either playfully or offensively. (Unintentionally) Given to her by French fans who, according to Sooyoung, couldn’t pronounce the “H” sound in Hyoyeon’s name. So when they heard her name being called when they had arrived at Charles de Gaulle Airport for SM Town Paris in 2011, they heard “Yonyeon!” instead of “Hyoyeon!”

• Family road trip around South Korea, stopping at scenic rest stops.
• First memory: “When I was around five to six years old, my family would definitely go visit this nearby park 2-3 times a week., but if we had a little more time, we would even go to a place further away and my family had a lot of fun making good food to eat and playing around. Anyway, there are a lot of pictures taken from back then, so any time I look at the pictures, I’ll remember those memories.”
